Maximise Your EV Charging Speed: Five Tips for Safe At-Home Charging

If you are currently charging your new EV by running an extension cord to a standard 10-amp wall socket in your garage, you are doing two things: waiting up to 30 hours for a full battery, and quietly overheating your home’s electrical wiring. Plugging a modern electric vehicle into a standard household outlet is the equivalent of trying to fill a commercial swimming pool with a garden hose. It isn't just painfully slow, it forces your home's infrastructure to run at absolute maximum capacity for hours on end.

  • Level 1 Charging uses a standard 240V household outlet and provides about 5-8 kilometres of range per hour.

  • Level 2 Charging uses 240V/415V outlet and can add 25-50 kilometres of range per hour.

  • DC Fast Charging is typically found at public charging stations and can charge an EV to 80% in 30 minutes or less.

At home, you’ll mostly use Level 1 or Level 2 chargers. To charge five times faster, you need to move from Level 1 to Level 2 charging. Check your EV’s manual or manufacturer website to confirm the maximum charging power your vehicle can handle. Installing a charger that exceeds your EV’s capacity won’t speed up charging and could cause issues.


Upgrade Your Home Electrical System


Under Australian Electrical Standards, installing an EV charger is highly regulated. Shortcuts don't just risk your car's battery warranty; they can void your home insurance. A compliant, safe installation requires:  

  • A Dedicated Circuit: Your charger cannot share a wire with any other appliance in the house.

  • Type A or B RCBO (Safety Switch): Specialised residual current devices designed to detect complex DC electrical faults unique to electric vehicles.  

  • Correct Cable Sizing: Heavy-duty wiring (typically 6mm² or 10mm² depending on the length of the run) to prevent the cables from heating up under sustained loads. 


Upgrading your electrical system might seem costly upfront, but it’s a one-time investment that improves safety and charging speed.


Choose the Right Level 2 Charger


Not all Level 2 chargers are created equal. To maximise charging speed:


  • Select a charger with a power output matching your EV’s maximum charging rate. For example, if your EV supports 7.2 kW charging, get a charger rated for at least that.

  • Look for chargers with adjustable power settings so you can control charging speed based on your needs.

  • Opt for chargers with smart features like scheduling, remote monitoring, and energy usage tracking.

  • Ensure the charger is certified by recognised safety standards AS3000.


A well-chosen charger can reduce charging time significantly while keeping your EV and home safe.


Optimise Charging Times and Habits


Charging speed isn’t just about hardware. How and when you charge matters:


  • Charge during off-peak hours if your utility offers lower rates. This saves money and reduces grid strain.

  • Avoid charging to 100% every time. Charging to 80-90% can be faster and better for battery health.

  • Precondition your EV battery if your car supports it. Heating or cooling the battery before charging can improve charging efficiency.

  • Keep your charging equipment and connectors clean and dry to maintain good electrical contact.


By adjusting your charging habits, you can make the most of your faster charger and extend your battery’s lifespan.


Maintain Safety at All Times


Faster charging means higher electrical loads, so safety is critical:


  • Never use extension cords or adapters with your EV charger.

  • Inspect your charging cable and connectors regularly for damage or wear.

  • Keep the charging area clear of flammable materials and ensure good ventilation.

  • Follow manufacturer instructions for installation and use.

  • Install a dedicated circuit breaker for your charger to prevent electrical faults.
